For an ignorant mind (cetasaḥ) filled with latent impressions (vāsanā), even safety (abhayam) can become a source of fear (bhayam). Just as for a deluded traveler (mugdhapānthasya) viewing from a distance, a tree-stump (sthāṇuḥ) appears to be a ghost (piśācatām).
