pārthivaḥ ātmani adūrasthām tām dharṣaṇām saṃdṛśya cintārṇavagataḥ aplavaḥ yathā pāram na asasāda.

Having perceived that impending humiliation within his own being (ātman), the king (pārthiva), having fallen into an ocean of anxiety, could not reach the other shore, just like someone without a boat.
