तनुभावपदं विप्र प्रधानं पदमुच्यते ।
तनोरनुचराद्यत् स्यादुपारूढं तदुच्यते ॥२॥

O Brahmin, the Aruḍha pada of the first house (Lagna-pada) is considered the principal pada. Whatever is derived from the house following the ascendant (i.e., the 12th house, for Upapada calculation), that is referred to as Upārūḍha.
