महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-8, chapter-65, verse-40

ततः प्रजज्वाल किरीटमाली क्रोधेन कक्षं प्रदहन्निवाग्निः ।
स कर्णमाकर्णविकृष्टसृष्टैः शरैः शरीरान्तकरैर्ज्वलद्भिः ।
मर्मस्वविध्यत्स चचाल दुःखाद्धैर्यात्तु तस्थावतिमात्रधैर्यः ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ prajajvāla kirīṭamālī; krodhena kakṣaṁ pradahannivāgniḥ ,
sa karṇamākarṇavikṛṣṭasṛṣṭaiḥ; śaraiḥ śarīrāntakarairjvaladbhiḥ ,
marmasvavidhyatsa cacāla duḥkhā;ddhairyāttu tasthāvatimātradhairyaḥ.

iva agniḥ saḥ karṇam ākarṇavikṛṣṭasṛṣṭaiḥ śaraiḥ

40. tataḥ kirīṭamālī krodhena kakṣam pradahan agniḥ iva
prajajvāla saḥ ākarṇavikṛṣṭasṛṣṭaiḥ śarīrāntakaraiḥ
jvaladbhiḥ śaraiḥ karṇam marmasu avidhyat saḥ
duḥkhāt cacāla tu dhairyāt atimātradairyaḥ tasthau
40. Then Arjuna (kirīṭamālī), adorned with a crown, blazed forth with anger like a fire consuming a dry forest. He (Arjuna) pierced Karna in his vital spots with blazing arrows, drawn fully to the ear and capable of ending life. Karna trembled from the pain, but due to his immense fortitude, he stood firm.
