महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-36, verse-7

ते सर्वे पूतपाप्मानो भवन्तीति परा श्रुतिः ।
ब्राह्मणार्थे हतो युद्धे मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया ॥७॥
7. te sarve pūtapāpmāno bhavantīti parā śrutiḥ ,
brāhmaṇārthe hato yuddhe mucyate brahmahatyayā.
7. te sarve pūtapāpmānaḥ bhavanti iti parā śrutiḥ
brāhmaṇārthe hataḥ yuddhe mucyate brahmahatyayā
7. te sarve pūtapāpmānaḥ bhavanti iti parā śrutiḥ
brāhmaṇārthe yuddhe hataḥ brahmahatyayā mucyate
7. All those (who bathe in the Avabhṛtha) become purified of their sins; thus is the supreme Vedic tradition (śruti). One who is killed in battle for the sake of a Brahmin is freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā).
