43. This bee, whose feet once graced the foreheads of magnificent elephants, whose home was among the lotus ponds, and who was blessed with the joy of embracing the creepers of kahḷāra, utpala, kunda, and campaka flowers—even this very bee, compelled by destiny (vidhi), now in the bitter cold of winter, tastes mere clods of earth and dry grass, and eats dry bark. Alas! Indeed, in times of adversity, the mind is driven to despair and wretchedness.
