महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-14, chapter-50, verse-14

प्रजापतिरिदं सर्वं तपसैवासृजत्प्रभुः ।
तथैव वेदानृषयस्तपसा प्रतिपेदिरे ॥१४॥

14. Lord Prajāpati indeed created all this by means of austerity (tapas). Similarly, the sages (ṛṣi) realized the Vedas (veda) through austerity (tapas).
