महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-57, verse-31

स्वकर्मभिर्मानवं संनिबद्धं तीव्रान्धकारे नरके पतन्तम् ।
महार्णवे नौरिव वायुयुक्ता दानं गवां तारयते परत्र ॥३१॥
31. svakarmabhirmānavaṁ saṁnibaddhaṁ; tīvrāndhakāre narake patantam ,
mahārṇave nauriva vāyuyuktā; dānaṁ gavāṁ tārayate paratra.

31. svakarmabhiḥ saṃnibaddham tīvrāndhakāre narake patantam mānavam,

31. A human being tightly bound by their own actions (karma) and falling into the intense darkness of hell is saved in the hereafter by the giving (dāna) of cows, just as a wind-powered boat rescues (one) in a great ocean.
