वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
एवमप्रतिबुद्धत्वादबुद्धमनुवर्तते ।
देहाद्देहसहस्राणि तथा समभिपद्यते ॥१॥

Vasiṣṭha said: Thus, owing to a lack of awakening, the unenlightened self (abuddha) continues to exist. In this way, it successively attains thousands of bodies (saṃsāra), transitioning from one body to another.
