महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-288, verse-18

पापीयसः क्षमेतैव श्रेयसः सदृशस्य च ।
विमानितो हतोऽऽक्रुष्ट एवं सिद्धिं गमिष्यति ॥१८॥

18. pāpīyasaḥ kṣametaiva śreyasaḥ sadṛśasya ca ,
vimānito hato''kruṣṭa evaṁ siddhiṁ gamiṣyati.

18. pāpīyasaḥ kṣameta eva śreyasaḥ sadṛśasya ca
vimānitaḥ hataḥ ākruṣṭaḥ evam siddhim gamiṣyati

18. pāpīyasaḥ śreyasaḥ ca sadṛśasya eva kṣameta
vimānitaḥ hataḥ ākruṣṭaḥ evam siddhim gamiṣyati

18. One should certainly forgive the inferior (wicked), the superior, and also one's equal. He who, despite being insulted, struck, or reviled, acts in this manner (i.e., with forgiveness) will attain success.
