A livelihood (vr̥tti) immediately adjacent to one's own intrinsic nature (svadharma) is [permissible] for one who cannot live by those other (forbidden) means. For one who upholds the primary course (prathama kalpa), survival (jīvanam) is by a secondary alternative (anukalpa).
