मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-77, verse-39

दिवाकरः समाधिस्थो वडवारूपधारिणीम् ।
तपश्चरन्तीं ददृशे उत्तरेषु कुरुष्वथ ॥३९॥
39. divākaraḥ samādhistho vaḍavārūpadhāriṇīm .
tapaścarantīṃ dadṛśe uttareṣu kuruṣvatha.

tapaḥ carantīm dadṛśe uttareṣu kuruṣu atha
39. Then the Sun god, who was absorbed in deep meditation (dhyāna), saw her in the northern Kuru region practicing severe austerity (tapas) while having assumed the form of a mare.
