महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-7, chapter-144, verse-42

स्वे स्वान्परे परांश्चापि निजघ्नुरितरेतरम् ।
निर्मर्यादमभूद्युद्धं रात्रौ घोरं भयावहम् ॥४२॥
42. sve svānpare parāṁścāpi nijaghnuritaretaram ,
nirmaryādamabhūdyuddhaṁ rātrau ghoraṁ bhayāvaham.

nirmaryādam abhūt yuddham rātrau ghoram bhayāvaham
42. sve svān nijaghnuḥ ca,

42. Their own people killed their own kin, and others attacked others, striking down one another. At night, the battle became terrible, terrifying, and utterly unrestrained.
