In this context, the primal cause (pradhāna) is the unmanifest (avyakta). The great cosmic intellect (mahat) is an evolute of the unmanifest (avyakta). And indeed, ego (ahaṅkāra) is an evolute of that primal great cosmic intellect (mahat).
