मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-29, verse-28

ब्राह्मणं प्राहुरतिथिं स पूज्यः शक्तितो बुधैः ।
न पृच्छेद् गोत्रचरणं स्वाध्यायञ्चापि पण्डितः ॥२८॥
28. brāhmaṇaṃ prāhuratithiṃ sa pūjyaḥ śaktito budhaiḥ .
na pṛcched gotracaraṇaṃ svādhyāyañcāpi paṇḍitaḥ.
28. brāhmaṇam prāhuḥ atithim sa pūjyaḥ śaktitaḥ budhaiḥ
na pṛcchet gotracaraṇam svādhyāyam ca api paṇḍitaḥ
28. The wise (budhaiḥ) declare that such a brāhmin is an uninvited guest (atithi), and he should be honored (pūjyaḥ) according to one's ability (śaktitaḥ). A discerning person (paṇḍitaḥ) should not inquire about his lineage (gotra), traditional school (caraṇam), or personal Vedic study (svādhyāya).
