dṛśyāsvādam ajñaḥ syāt na dṛṣṭvā ikṣum iva upalaḥ

If the seer (draṣṭṛ) and the seen (dṛśya), inherently being of the nature of consciousness (citātmake), were not one (ekam), then the ignorant person would not experience the taste of the perceived (dṛśyāsvādam), just as a stone (upalaḥ), even after seeing sugarcane (ikṣum), does not taste it.
