मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-117, verse-31

पूर्वमृग उवाच ।
राजेन्द्र नैष हन्तव्यो धन्योऽयं सुकृती मृगः ।
बहवस्तनया ह्यस्य हन्तव्योऽहमसन्ततिः ॥३१॥
31. pūrvamṛga uvāca .
rājendra naiṣa hantavyo dhanyo'yaṃ sukṛtī mṛgaḥ .
bahavastanayā hyasya hantavyo'hamasantatiḥ.
31. pūrvamṛgaḥ uvāca rājendra na eṣaḥ hantavyaḥ dhanyaḥ ayam
sukṛtī mṛgaḥ bahavaḥ tanayāḥ hi asya hantavyaḥ aham asantatiḥ
31. The first deer said, "O King, this one should not be killed. This virtuous deer is blessed, for he has many sons. I, however, am without progeny, and therefore I am the one who should be killed."
