Formerly, Agni (the fire deity) became associated with an animal, and Varuna (the Lord of Waters) was associated with an animal. Then, the Sun-god (Bhāsvān) attained elevated states, and those who participated in the Vedic ritual (yajña) achieved steadfast devotion.
