Vyāsa said: "O King, in Kurukṣetra, there was a man named Mudgala, whose livelihood (vṛtti) was gleaning (śiloñcha), whose soul (ātman) was devoted to natural law (dharma), who had strict vows, was truthful, and was free from envy."
