महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-6, chapter-77, verse-43

ते हन्यमानाः पार्थेन भीष्मं शांतनवं ययुः ।
अगाधे मज्जमानानां भीष्मस्त्राताभवत्तदा ॥४३॥
43. te hanyamānāḥ pārthena bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ yayuḥ ,
agādhe majjamānānāṁ bhīṣmastrātābhavattadā.

agādhe majjamānānām bhīṣmaḥ trātā abhavat tadā
43. pārtena hanyamānāḥ te śāntanavam bhīṣmam yayuḥ.

43. Being struck by Partha, they approached Bhishma, the son of Śantanu. Bhishma then became the protector for those sinking in the unfathomable depths [of despair/danger].
