महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-284, verse-9

ततो मानेन संपन्नो रक्षन्नात्मपराजयम् ।
करोति येन भोगी स्यामिति तस्माद्विनश्यति ॥९॥
9. tato mānena saṁpanno rakṣannātmaparājayam ,
karoti yena bhogī syāmiti tasmādvinaśyati.

karoti yena bhogī syāt iti tasmāt vinaśyati
9. tataḥ mānena saṃpannaḥ (naraḥ) ātmaparājayam rakṣan,
yena bhogī syāt iti karoti,

9. Then, being filled with pride and seeking to avoid his own defeat, he acts (in such a way) that he might become an enjoyer of worldly pleasures. Consequently, he perishes from that (behavior).
