योगवासिष्ठः       yogavāsiṣṭhaḥ - book-1, chapter-27, verse-16

पुरोगतैरप्यनवाप्तरूपैस्तरङ्गिणीतुङ्गतरङ्गकल्पैः ।
क्रियाफलैर्दैववशादुपेतैर्विडम्ब्यते भिन्नरुचिर्हि लोकः ॥ १६ ॥

16. puraḥ-gataiḥ api anavāpta-rūpaiḥ
taraṅgiṇī-tuṅga-taraṅga-kalpaiḥ
kriyā-phalaiḥ daiva-vaśāt upetaiḥ
viḍambyate bhinna-ruciḥ hi lokaḥ
16. hi bhinna-ruciḥ lokaḥ puraḥ-gataiḥ
api anavāpta-rūpaiḥ
taraṅgiṇī-tuṅga-taraṅga-kalpaiḥ daiva-vaśāt
upetaiḥ kriyā-phalaiḥ viḍambyate
16. Indeed, people with diverse inclinations are deluded by the results of actions (karma), which, though seemingly achieved, never fully materialize in their desired form. These results are like the towering waves of a river, appearing and disappearing, and are often brought about by the power of destiny.
