17. ātmānaṃ manyate corvoṃ tadgandhañca jahāti saḥ .

He considers the self (ātman) to be the earth, and thereby abandons its characteristic smell. Just as the subtle taste is inherent in water, similarly, form is inherent in fire (tejas).
