मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
सृष्ट्वा जगदिदं ब्रह्मा प्रविभागमथाकरोत् ।
वर्णाश्रमसमुद्राद्रिद्वीपानां पूर्ववद्यथा ॥१॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having created this universe, Brahmā then established divisions, just as he had done before, for the social classes (varṇas), the stages of life (āśramas), and for the oceans, mountains, and islands.
