महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-259, verse-28

कुम्भकर्णमथोवाच तथैव प्रपितामहः ।
स वव्रे महतीं निद्रां तमसा ग्रस्तचेतनः ॥२८॥
28. kumbhakarṇamathovāca tathaiva prapitāmahaḥ ,
sa vavre mahatīṁ nidrāṁ tamasā grastacetanaḥ.
28. kumbhakarṇam atha uvāca tathā eva prapitāmahaḥ
sa vavre mahatīm nidrām tamasā grastacetanaḥ
28. Then, the great-grandfather (Brahma) spoke to Kumbhakarna. With his consciousness seized by the quality of darkness (tamas), he chose a profound sleep.
