महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-214, verse-29

ये तु तं संश्रिता देवं नानावर्णास्तदा जनाः ।
तानप्याहुः पारिषदान्ब्राह्मणाः सुमहाबलान् ॥२९॥
29. ye tu taṁ saṁśritā devaṁ nānāvarṇāstadā janāḥ ,
tānapyāhuḥ pāriṣadānbrāhmaṇāḥ sumahābalān.
29. ye tu tam saṃśritāḥ devam nānāvarṇāḥ tadā janāḥ
tān api āhuḥ pāriṣadān brāhmaṇāḥ sumahābalān
29. But those people of various social classes (varṇa) who had taken refuge in that deity, the Brahmins then declared them to be his extremely powerful attendants.
