महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-103, verse-16

संभृत्य महतीं सेनां चतुरङ्गां युधिष्ठिर ।
साम्नैवावर्तने पूर्वं प्रयतेथास्ततो युधि ॥१६॥
16. saṁbhṛtya mahatīṁ senāṁ caturaṅgāṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
sāmnaivāvartane pūrvaṁ prayatethāstato yudhi.

16. O Yudhishthira, having assembled a mighty four-limbed army, you should first endeavor to bring them around (to peace) through conciliation (sāman) alone; thereafter, (strive) in battle.
