महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-73, verse-29

आत्मदोषैर्नियच्छन्ति सर्वे दुःखसुखे जनाः ।
मन्ये दुश्चरितं तेऽस्ति यस्येयं निष्कृतिः कृता ॥२९॥
29. ātmadoṣairniyacchanti sarve duḥkhasukhe janāḥ ,
manye duścaritaṁ te'sti yasyeyaṁ niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā.
29. ātma-doṣaiḥ niyacchanti sarve duḥkha-sukhe janāḥ
manye duścaritam te asti yasya iyam niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā
29. All people themselves bring about their joy and sorrow through their own faults. I believe that you must have committed some misconduct, for which this is the retribution.
