महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-111, verse-24

इष्टं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं नियमश्च स्वनुष्ठितः ।
सर्वमेवानपत्यस्य न पावनमिहोच्यते ॥२४॥
24. iṣṭaṁ dattaṁ tapastaptaṁ niyamaśca svanuṣṭhitaḥ ,
sarvamevānapatyasya na pāvanamihocyate.
24. iṣṭam dattam tapaḥ taptam niyamaḥ ca su-anuṣṭhitaḥ
sarvam eva anapatyasya na pāvanam iha ucyate
24. Sacrifices performed, gifts given, penance (tapas) practiced, and vows diligently observed – all of these are declared not to be sanctifying in this world for one without offspring.
