अलर्क उवाच ।
कथितोऽयं महाभागे राज्यतन्त्राश्रितस्त्वया ।
धर्मं तमहमिच्छामि श्रोतुं वर्णाश्रमात्मकम् ॥२॥

kathito'yaṃ mahābhāge rājyatantrāśritastvayā .
dharmaṃ tamahamicchāmi śrotuṃ varṇāśramātmakam.

Alarka said, "O noble lady, you have explained the principles concerning statecraft (rājyatantra). Now I wish to hear about that natural law (dharma) which pertains to the social orders (varṇa) and stages of life (āśrama)."
