महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-9, chapter-40, verse-14

छिद्यमानं यथानन्तं वनं परशुना विभो ।
बभूवापहतं तच्चाप्यवकीर्णमचेतनम् ॥१४॥
14. chidyamānaṁ yathānantaṁ vanaṁ paraśunā vibho ,
babhūvāpahataṁ taccāpyavakīrṇamacetanam.
14. chidyamānam yathā anantam vanam paraśunā vibho
babhūva apahatam tat ca api avakīrṇam acetanam
14. vibho yathā anantam vanam paraśunā chidyamānam
tat ca api apahatam avakīrṇam acetanam babhūva
14. Just as an immense forest (vana) is cut down by an axe, O mighty lord, so too that kingdom became devastated, scattered, and lifeless.
