महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-134, verse-14

अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
अष्टौ शाणाः शतमानं वहन्ति तथाष्टपादः शरभः सिंहघाती ।
अष्टौ वसूञ्शुश्रुम देवतासु यूपश्चाष्टास्रिर्विहितः सर्वयज्ञः ॥१४॥
14. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
aṣṭau śāṇāḥ śatamānaṁ vahanti; tathāṣṭapādaḥ śarabhaḥ siṁhaghātī ,
aṣṭau vasūñśuśruma devatāsu; yūpaścāṣṭāsrirvihitaḥ sarvayajñaḥ.
14. aṣṭāvakraḥ uvāca | aṣṭau śāṇāḥ śatamānaṃ
vahanti tathā aṣṭapādaḥ śarabhaḥ
siṃhaghātī | aṣṭau vasūn śuśruma devatāsu
yūpaḥ ca aṣṭāsriḥ vihitaḥ sarvayajñaḥ
14. aṣṭāvakraḥ uvāca aṣṭau śāṇāḥ śatamānaṃ
vahanti tathā aṣṭapādaḥ siṃhaghātī
śarabhaḥ devatāsu aṣṭau vasūn śuśruma
ca sarvayajñaḥ yūpaḥ aṣṭāsriḥ vihitaḥ
14. Aṣṭāvakra said: Eight *śāṇa* units constitute a *śatamāna* unit. Similarly, the eight-footed Sharabha is a lion-killer. We have heard of eight Vasus among the deities. And the sacrificial post (yūpa), which embodies the entire Vedic ritual (yajña), is prescribed to be eight-angled.
