तमो ह्यष्टविधं हित्वा जहौ पञ्चविधं रजः ।

For, having abandoned the eight-fold darkness (tamas), he gave up the five-fold passion (rajas). Then the intelligent one gave up goodness (sattva); that was indeed astonishing.
