महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-133, verse-11

युद्धाय क्षत्रियः सृष्टः संजयेह जयाय च ।
क्रूराय कर्मणे नित्यं प्रजानां परिपालने ।
जयन्वा वध्यमानो वा प्राप्नोतीन्द्रसलोकताम् ॥११॥
11. yuddhāya kṣatriyaḥ sṛṣṭaḥ saṁjayeha jayāya ca ,
krūrāya karmaṇe nityaṁ prajānāṁ paripālane ,
jayanvā vadhyamāno vā prāpnotīndrasalokatām.

iha jayāya ca krūrāya karmaṇe nityaṃ

11. O Sañjaya, a kṣatriya is created for battle, for victory here (in this world). Their intrinsic nature (dharma) is always directed towards harsh actions and the protection of the people. Whether victorious or slain, such a kṣatriya attains a place in Indra's realm.
