Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus addressed, the revered Agni, known as Dhūmaketu and Hutāśana, meditated with a desire to see Varuṇa. Varuṇa was the world-protector (lokapāla), a son of Aditi, a deity dwelling in the waters, and the lord of waters (jaleśvara).
