वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-2, chapter-31, verse-29

प्राप्स्यामि यानद्य गुणान् को मे श्वस्तान्प्रदास्यति ।
अपक्रमणमेवातः सर्वकामैरहं वृणे ॥२९॥
29. prāpsyāmi yānadya guṇān ko me śvastānpradāsyati ,
apakramaṇamevātaḥ sarvakāmairahaṃ vṛṇe.
29. prāpsyāmi yān adya guṇān kaḥ me śvas tān pradāsyati
apakramaṇam eva ataḥ sarvakāmaiḥ aham vṛṇe
29. adya yān guṇān prāpsyāmi kaḥ śvas tān me pradāsyati
ataḥ apakramaṇam eva aham sarvakāmaiḥ vṛṇe
29. The qualities (guṇa) that I would attain today, who will bestow them upon me tomorrow? Therefore, I choose only departure (apakramaṇa) in preference to all desires (kāma).
