मदालसोवाच ।
अतः परं शृणुष्वेमं पुत्र भक्त्या यदाहृतम् ।
पितॄणां प्रीतये यद्वा वर्ज्यं वा प्रीतिकारकम् ॥१॥

Madālasā said: 'My son, now listen attentively and with devotion (bhakti) to this [teaching] about what is offered for the ancestors' satisfaction, and also what should be avoided or what brings them joy.'
