असता भूतसंघेन क्षयोऽहंकारनामधृक् ।
वेतालः शिशुनेवेह मिथ्यैव परिकल्पितः ॥ ३ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: The ego (ahaṅkāra), which is nothing but decay, is imagined by a non-existent host of elements, just as a ghost (vetāla) is falsely conceived here by a child.
