महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-192, verse-2

अपुत्रया मया राजन्सपत्नीनां भयादिदम् ।
कन्या शिखण्डिनी जाता पुरुषो वै निवेदितः ॥२॥
2. aputrayā mayā rājansapatnīnāṁ bhayādidam ,
kanyā śikhaṇḍinī jātā puruṣo vai niveditaḥ.

2. O King, by me, who was sonless, this (deception) was done out of fear of my co-wives. Though a daughter, Shikhandini, was born, she was indeed declared to be a male (puruṣa).
