वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-7, chapter-15, verse-18

अध्रुवे हि शरीरे यो न करोति तपो ऽर्जनम् ।
स पश्चात्तप्यते मूढो मृतो दृष्ट्वात्मनो गतिम् ॥१८॥
18. adhruve hi śarīre yo na karoti tapo'rjanam ,
sa paścāttapyate mūḍho mṛto dṛṣṭvātmano gatim.

paścāt tapyate mūḍhaḥ mṛtaḥ dṛṣṭvā ātmanaḥ gatim
18. hi,
yaḥ adhruve śarīre tapaḥ arjanam na karoti,
saḥ mūḍhaḥ mṛtaḥ ātmanaḥ gatim dṛṣṭvā paścāt tapyate.
18. Indeed, whoever does not acquire ascetic merit (tapas) in this impermanent body, that foolish person, after death, seeing his own destination (gati), repents later.
