वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-2, chapter-40, verse-17

द्विजातींस्तु पदातींस्तान् रामश्चारित्रवत्सलः ।
न शशाक घृणाचक्षुः परिमोक्तुं रथेन सः ॥१७॥
17. dvijātīṃstu padātīṃstān rāmaścāritravatsalaḥ ,
na śaśāka ghṛṇācakṣuḥ parimoktuṃ rathena saḥ.

17. But Rama, cherishing noble conduct and having eyes full of compassion, could not abandon those Brahmins, who were on foot, by (going in) the chariot.
