महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-6, chapter-1, verse-11

संज्ञाश्च विविधास्तास्तास्तेषां चक्रे युधिष्ठिरः ।
एवंवादी वेदितव्यः पाण्डवेयोऽयमित्युत ॥११॥
11. saṁjñāśca vividhāstāstāsteṣāṁ cakre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
evaṁvādī veditavyaḥ pāṇḍaveyo'yamityuta.
11. saṃjñāḥ ca vividhāḥ tāḥ tāḥ teṣām cakre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
evamvādī veditavyaḥ pāṇḍaveyaḥ ayam iti uta
11. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ teṣām vividhāḥ tāḥ tāḥ saṃjñāḥ ca cakre.

11. Yudhishthira assigned various unique recognition signs (saṃjñāḥ) to each of them. He declared, "This one, speaking in such a manner, is to be known as a Pandava (pāṇḍaveyaḥ)."
