अपत्यानामिव स्वेषां प्रजानां रक्षणे रतः ।
चर धर्मं त्यजाधर्मं पितॄन्देवांश्च पूजय ॥२१॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Be compassionate towards all beings, benevolent, devoted (to their welfare), and free from envy, just as one is engaged in protecting one's own children. Practice natural law (dharma) and abandon unrighteousness (adharma). Worship your ancestors and the gods.
