महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-165, verse-16

विशेषतस्तु कार्त्तिक्यां द्विजेभ्यः संप्रयच्छति ।
शरद्व्यपाये रत्नानि पौर्णमास्यामिति श्रुतिः ॥१६॥
16. viśeṣatastu kārttikyāṁ dvijebhyaḥ saṁprayacchati ,
śaradvyapāye ratnāni paurṇamāsyāmiti śrutiḥ.

16. Indeed, it is a traditional teaching (śruti) that at the end of autumn, specifically on the Kārttikī full moon day, one should especially offer jewels to the Brahmins (dvija).
