मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्येष तामसः सर्गो ब्रह्मणोऽव्यक्तजन्मनः ।
रुद्रसर्गं प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१॥

ityeṣa tāmasaḥ sargo brahmaṇo'vyaktajanmanaḥ .
rudrasargaṃ pravakṣyāmi tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: "This concludes the creation characterized by ignorance (tāmasa) originating from Brahmā, who is born from the unmanifest. I will now explain the creation of Rudra; listen to me as I narrate it."
