महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-24, verse-18

व्यास उवाच ।
छन्द्यमानोऽपि ब्रह्मर्षिः पार्थिवेन महात्मना ।
नान्यं वै वरयामास तस्माद्दण्डादृते वरम् ॥१८॥
18. vyāsa uvāca ,
chandyamāno'pi brahmarṣiḥ pārthivena mahātmanā ,
nānyaṁ vai varayāmāsa tasmāddaṇḍādṛte varam.
18. vyāsaḥ uvāca | chandyamānaḥ api brahmarṣiḥ pārthivena
mahātmanā | na anyam vai varayāmāsa tasmāt daṇḍāt ṛte varam
18. vyāsaḥ uvāca mahātmanā pārthivena chandyamānaḥ api brahmarṣiḥ tasmāt daṇḍāt ṛte anyam varam vai na varayāmāsa.
18. Vyasa said: "Though being urged (chandyamāna) by the great-souled (mahātman) king, the Brahmin sage (brahmarṣi) did not choose any other boon (vara) than the staff of punishment (daṇḍa) from him."
