लोकेनायं मृत इति ततो बाष्पसंपूरिताक्षं शावीं पूजां विरचितवता संचयीकृत्य दारु ।
दग्धुं नीतोऽस्म्यतिभयमहं प्रज्वलच्चित्यनन्तप्रोद्यत्स्फोटस्फुटपटपटारावरौद्रं श्मशानम् ॥ ९ ॥

9. "This one is dead," the people declared, their eyes filled with tears as they performed the funeral rites (śāvī pūjā) and gathered wood. Then, I was led, overcome with great fear, to the terrifying cremation ground (śmaśāna), which was dreadful with the endless, rising, bursting, and distinct "paṭa-paṭa" sounds of the blazing pyre.
