महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-8, verse-27

दण्डपाणिर्यथा गोषु पालो नित्यं स्थिरो भवेत् ।
ब्राह्मणान्ब्रह्म च तथा क्षत्रियः परिपालयेत् ॥२७॥
27. daṇḍapāṇiryathā goṣu pālo nityaṁ sthiro bhavet ,
brāhmaṇānbrahma ca tathā kṣatriyaḥ paripālayet.

brāhmaṇān brahma ca tathā kṣatriyaḥ paripālayet
27. yathā daṇḍapāṇiḥ pālaḥ goṣu nityam sthiraḥ bhavet,
tathā kṣatriyaḥ brāhmaṇān ca brahma paripālayet.
27. Just as a herdsman holding a staff should always be steadfast among his cattle, similarly, a kṣatriya (warrior/ruler) should protect the Brahmins and the sacred knowledge (brahman).
