महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-14, chapter-28, verse-18

अहिंसा सर्वभूतानां नित्यमस्मासु रोचते ।
प्रत्यक्षतः साधयामो न परोक्षमुपास्महे ॥१८॥
18. ahiṁsā sarvabhūtānāṁ nityamasmāsu rocate ,
pratyakṣataḥ sādhayāmo na parokṣamupāsmahe.

18. Non-violence towards all living beings (bhūtas) is always cherished by us. We achieve (our goals) directly; we do not resort to indirect (means).
