महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-67, verse-26

तथा प्रशंसते दीपान्यमः पितृहितेप्सया ।
तस्माद्दीपप्रदो नित्यं संतारयति वै पितॄन् ॥२६॥
26. tathā praśaṁsate dīpānyamaḥ pitṛhitepsayā ,
tasmāddīpaprado nityaṁ saṁtārayati vai pitṝn.
26. tathā praśaṃsate dīpān yamaḥ pitṛhita-īpsayā |
tasmāt dīpa-pradaḥ nityam saṃtārayati vai pitṝn
26. tathā yamaḥ pitṛhita-īpsayā dīpān praśaṃsate
tasmāt dīpa-pradaḥ nityam vai pitṝn saṃtārayati
26. Thus, Yama praises lamps out of a desire for the welfare of the ancestors. Therefore, one who always offers lamps (dāna) undoubtedly causes his ancestors to cross over (from suffering).
